V letech druhé světové války používalo americké letectvo tento těžký bombardovací letoun k náletům na cíle v nepřítelem okupované Evropě. Dlouhé lety nad cíle a zase zpět si vyžádaly krutou daň mezi osádkami i letadly. V počátečném období nasazení těchto bombardérů navíc Spojenci disponovali jenom velmi omezeným počtem doprovodných stíhaček, jež by měly dostatečný dolet, aby mohly svazy bombardovacích letadel chránit proti německým stíhacím eskadrám. Jediným způsobem obrany tak zůstával let v těsných formacích, které se soustředěnou palbou všech zbraní palubních střelců pokoušely odehnat německé stíhače, již stále znovu a znovu usilovali proniknout touto clonou ohně a oceli k bombardérům. Celkem bylo postaveno více než 12 000 letounů nesoucích souhrnné označení Fortress. Jejich hlavním uživatelem se stala americká 8. letecká armáda, operující z Anglie, a 15. letecká armáda, která působila ve Středomoří. V omezeném počtu byly ale tyto stroje nasazeny i na Dálném východě a létalo na nich i britské Královské letectvo, jež je používalo u svých Velitelství bombardovacího i pobřežního letectva.
